Our Rainbow Bridge Cats

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor.

Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance.

His bright eyes are intent.

His eager body quivers.

Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Pippin and Tidbit: Our first two cats.  They were sisters, Pippin, a very pretty semi-longhaired calico and Tidbit, a dark tabby. We got them from a co-worker of Mike's at Wang Labs.  Mary Alice wasn't too sure, as she had never had cats, only dogs.  So they came home on a "trial" on Friday, stayed for the weekend, "just to be sure"- and, of course, never left again!  They made the move with us from Methuen, MA to Londonderry, NH.  They were our first Rainbow Bridge residents.

Sassquatch: (Squatch) He was the fourth of the kittens we adopted from the Derry Humane Society (his siblings, Mo, Tux and Worf are still with us.  Sqautch got his name because he was polydactyl on all four paws, so naming him after "Bigfoot" seemed appropriate.  He was quite agile with those huge front paws, which looked like catcher's mitts.  One of his favorite "toys" was an unpopped kernel of popcorn, which he could scoop up in those huge paws and toss around the kitchen.  If you blew into Squatch's face (gently of course) he would bat softly at your face with a paw, and if you kept it up, he'd grab your cheeks with both paws.  Squatch tested positive for FeLV and eventually went to the Rainbow Bridge due to complications from that, in Spring of 1997.

Tabasco: (Tabby) A tiny orange tabby boy Mary Alice fell in love with in a local pet store.  Mike, being the softy he is, went out one day and just brought the little guy home!  He should have known what we were in for, because while Mike was paying for him, Tabby stuck his paw into a jar of fur mice and picked one out for himself!  That cat, as little as he was, could eat! He would eat anything, anytime- he stole the chicken (very neatly, without disturbing the rest of it) out of Stephanie's sandwich when she turned her back for a few seconds, and he was the only one of our cats who ever got into the garbage pail.  You could always tell when Tabby had something he shouldn't- walk out into the kitchen and you would hear  "Grrrr!  Grrr!" from under the table!  Our vet discovered a lump in Tabby's tummy at a routine kitten check.  It turned out to be cancer.  She operated and got the main part of it out, but it was so involved in the stomach lining that she couldn't get it all.  We brought him home, and he fought it for a good year and a half, but eventually, he just couldn't fight anymore.

Fudge.jpg (58562 bytes) Vanilla Fudge: (Or Fudge, Fudgie, or Weasel) She was a seal point Siamese with the beautiful blue eyes typical of the breed.  She was the self-proclaimed Princess of the Whole Entire World- and she truly believed that she is! (I never told her that there is any rank above Princess, and as far as she was concerned, the Whole Entire World consisted of our house!) She could be a spoiled brat at times (definitely our fault!) and absolutely insisted on getting her way, whether it was the prime spot in the pile of cats or attention from us. She would play fetch almost endlessly (when she was in the mood- and you knew when she was. She brought the toys to you!), but only with pipe cleaner toys. Fudge had the vocal chords of a Siamese, as well. You knew you'd been told off when she finished- just be glad you don't speak cat!  Unfortunately, Fudge crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Monday, December 16, 2002, due to advanced cancer.  She is missed greatly.

Sushi.jpg (24546 bytes) Sushi: We adopted Sushi from Kitty Angels at the same time we adopted Max. We were planning on taking only one, but they are both such great guys, we couldn't choose! He was found wandering loose in Londonderry, NH. We can only hope he was an escapee or got lost somehow, and wasn't just thrown away by someone who didn't want him anymore. He is just such a sweet cat, we can't imagine why anyone would do that to him. He had a lot of Oriental in him, both in looks and personality. He was definitely a people cat and spent evenings curled up in Mike's lap when we were watching TV.  He loved to have his cheeks scratched and would push against your hand if you stopped, and if that didn't  work, would reach out and grab your hand with a paw!  Sushi fought an upper respiratory disease for several years before he went to the Rainbow Bridge in January of 2004

Coco.jpg (30232 bytes) Coconut: (Coco) She was an adoptee from the Kitty Angels shelter in Tyngsboro, MA. Coco was about 2 years old when we brought her home. She hated the shelter and didn't like the woman who runs it. We were volunteers at the shelter at the time and our youngest daughter was able to hold her and pet her, much to the surprise of the shelter owner. Coco finally decided she hated it so much, that she just stopped eating and was literally starving herself to death. We got a call asking if we could please take her before she starved, and since we're such big softies, she came here to live. As you can see, she is no longer in danger of starving!  Coco developed a very aggressive, very invasive cancerous tumor in her cheek, which was inoperable and finally became unable to eat.  She went to the Rainbow Bridge in July of 2004.

Bibbett: (Benjamin) Bibbett was adopted from a friend who couldn't have pets in a new apartment.  He is a cream cameo, straight nose Persian.  He is really Stephanie's cat, as she is the Persian fan.  Bibbett was a cranky old man, who insisted that the food dishes got filled every night, whether they needed it or not.  He would follow Mary Alice around the house, meowing at her from about 10:30 on, until food was added to all the dishes.  Sometimes, it was just a matter of dropping a piece or two into each dish, because they were full, but until you did, he would not stop.  Bibbett suffered from chronic sinus infections, not uncommon in Persians.  He also eventually became arthritic and began to show the other complications of an aging cat.  He went to the Rainbow Bridge in July of 2004, just two days after Coconut, at 14 years old.
