The Pond
The pond is approximately 5'x7' and 18" at it's deepest. It sits just off the corner of the deck at our side door. We dug it in July of 1999. It would have been deeper, but we hit the Rock of Gibraltar at the bottom and didn't have a crane! :)
It is lined with a sheet of PVC pond liner and the edges are bluestone. I have a yellow koi, a multi-colored butterfly koi, a blue calico shubunkin, a calico oranda, a red comet and a bunch of baby fish in there right now.
Here are some pictures of the pond: (Click on the image to see a larger version)
This is the pond just after we finished it in 1999. Since then, I've added lots of plants and we redid the waterfall this summer.
These pictures were taken this past summer (2001). You can see the many pads from my banana lily floating on the water, with several marginal plants in the background. The red comet is in the center, partially under a lily pad. Several baby fish are to the right.
This was taken from the side of the pond. You can see the banana lily pads, with my rushes just visible behind them. In the foreground are a scarlet tiger, pickerel rush and miniature cattails. The red comet and butterfly koi are in the center, as well as those babies again!
This is from the front of the pond and gives you a look at the new waterfall. We used extra bluestone to make the falls area flatter on the "steps." It makes the flow much better, I think. The fish are the yellow koi to the left, the butterfly koi in front center with the calico shubunkin behind.
This is the garden area to the left of the pond, in front of the deck. That is English thyme planted there, with petunias and hostas.
